Top 3 Kettlebell Exercises for BJJ?

There are many kettlebell exercises that are great for BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.) When training our BJJ players and other combat athletes I seperate their training into 3 phases:

  • General Physical Training
  • Directed Physical Training
  • Specific or Specialized Physical Training

 

I will go into detail for each one of these phases in a  future post but the below kettlebell exercises fall into the catagory of Directed Physical Training because they are directed at improving a certain phsical attribute needed in BJJ.

Directed Physical Training may consist of elements that are both general and more sport- specific. The muscle groups and energy systems involved will be more similar to the actual sport skill while maintaining its own distinct flavor.

Movement mechanics and speed might be closer to the actual sport skill as well.

  3. I have done high rep cleans quite a bit—if you have an old rotator cuff problem that flares up on occasion, or tendinitis, etc., high rep cleans are a good snatch alternative for cardio. I have never done “The Gorilla” before, but played with it right after I saw the vid, pretty awesome drill. I am glad to be reminded how great an exercie that the bent press is.

    Thanks for your input! I like the Gorilla Clean because it feels like pummeling and it’s a killer on the heartrate.
